In my second blog post ‘ Lets declutter that closet! [poshmark review] ‘, I had a in-depth review on a online consignment shop known as poshmark to read about it please check out my blog post about it. Today, I am going to be reviewing a mobile app that has a similar concept known as Mercari. As you can tell from my last couple of blog posts, I am in the process of living a more simplified life. This means, I am not only trying to empty out my closet, but I am getting rid of stuff that no longer brings me joy.
In May of last year I came across an app called Mercari -an app where anyone can buy and sell just about everything! Unlike Poshmark-an app known to sell gently used women’s clothing (and now recently new cosmetics!) – Mercari is basically a mobile version of eBay when it comes to selling.

Mercari provides a hassle-free and secure way to buy and sell items straight from your mobile device or tablet. This is awesome! Not only you can sell your clothes, but you can sell everything else! Mercari  is a free app, unlike Poshmark-It DOES NOT take a % of your earnings, however you are charged with shipping fee (you also have the option of holding the buyers responsible for shipping).  If you are interested in a community/social network type of shopping and selling experience than this is the app for you.
The app is extremely user friendly, easy to use, and once you start, you’ll wonder ‘What took you so long?’ Selling your old treasures consists of three simple steps
1. List your item, 2. Ship your item (they pay for shipping), and 3. Earn cash! Easy right?

I signed up with the intention of getting rid of unnecessary makeup that I have ever used or only swatch, that have been collecting dust in my drawers the last couple of months. At first I thought that this app was very similar to Poshmark, yes- in some aspect this mobile friendly app is similar to Poshmark, but as a whole- It is very different from Poshmark! However, it is quickly becoming one of my favorite apps that I use to decluttering my life.

Poshmark verses Mercari.
– Cashing out & Monday Processing. You have to request a direct deposit before Mondays, in order to receive your money within the next 5 business days. Monday is the day the app start processing your money.  You do not get your cash-out instantly. For example, with Poshmark you can cash-out your earnings, and in 3 business days you will see that your earnings have been deposited into your account. Mercari charges $2 if you try to request your earnings, to avoid the charge, the app requires a minimum of $10 .

– You cannot share your items. This can make selling difficult, but there are ways around it.

-Once item is sold, you can privately talk to your buyer.

-You can sell and buy anything you want.

-Have the option to delete items once they have been sold and ship.

-Choices in Shipping. You have the choice to offer free shipping, as well as charging for shipping-you are in charge. You are also given with the option of pre-paid shipping with FedEx or USPS- however you also have the option to ship the items yourself-You must include tracking.
FedEx Shipping
comes with better tracking- (0.5-3lbs/$6, 3-10lbs/$9, 10-20lbs/$15)
USPS
comes with tracking and first class shipping- (0-0.05Lbs/$4, 0.5-3lbs/$6,3-10lbs/$9, 10-20lbs/$15)

To make your Mercari experience easier here are a few things I have learned, and wished I had gotten these tips when I started. Some cross over to how I made my posh-life much easier.

1. Be Active. Be Honest. Be Informative.  You must be completely honest when posting your items, if there’s a small flaw, mention it, and include a photo. Compared to sites like eBay, potential buyers tend to ask more questions than on other sites so you must be more active in order to stay competitive. You don’t necessary have to answer questions within a nano second, but please answer questions in a timely manner; Pro Tip: I normally log on at 10am, 2pm, and 8pm and spend at least 5-10 minutes answering questions.

2. Have a Good Cover Photo. The saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” does not imply in this case. A good cover photo includes the following: Showcase the item that will appeal the eye, photo must be evenly lit, sharp, and clear. You are only given 4 photos per item so choose your images wisely.  Pro tip: when selling your items make sure you take the pictures on your phone in the square setting as you cannot upload other sized photos or photos from your computer, it must be done through the app. The app also have the option where you can edit your images, (boosting brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc.,).

3. Repost unsold items & place all the sold items at the bottom. This make things much easier for the buyer, seller, and sharer. Every time you have sold something, I recommend reposting items you have not sold, and deleting the old posts. This will bring sold items to the bottom from all your listings- your closet will appear less cluttered, and could possible help potential buyers engage in your closet easier. Reposting available listings will also make it quicker for you to sell your items- it will not only update your listings to the top of the search engine, but it will briefly bring your items to the exposure page, resorting to creating more exposure and more sales.
